I tried and it was just way too annoying. Maybe I'll try again with one of the newer clients.

I usually use eMule to wander the eDonkey network.

I only use it for private trackers....and only one tracker in particular really, it's just too slow especially with public trackers, irc is much quicker

What is a private tracker?

The difficulty in searching, compared to other P2P systems, was annoying.

Yes it does take a little more effort to search. But its pretty simple, I just use one website.
And if you want a good client to try - Azeurus

A private tracker is a site where you have to sign up and maintain a good ratio (ie upload as well as download), you also have to stick to some rules. Sometimes private trackers are invite only, or they switch to invite mode when the user count is above a certain amount, higher ranked members get invites to use to invite new people to the site.

This means you don't get things that nobody is seeding, nothing named wrong, you know what everything is and you get decent download speeds quite often and you can also request things.

I use http://www.underground-gamer.com for retro games.

I only really use torrent for that though, it's much simpler to do a simple command on irc like "@find keyword", the problem with irc is that if you don't know what you're doing and aren't comfortable with text commands then you'll struggle.

ah yes I remember IRC!
Those were the days.. it was great however a few years back I could not get access to any rooms I used to go to, plus it became too time consuming to keep searching from the command line.

Torrents are just one type of P2P.

Read How Torrents Work.

Just install uTorrent and go to Bittorrent sites (ah, names escape me for the moment), and you are all set to go.
