Rep Power: 3 | How to download from FTP? I have recently got an Internet connection. Can anyone tell me how to download from FTP?
Someone said to use Cute-FTP. I am using that (I am new to FTP) but it says "unable to connect to sever." |

Rep Power: 6 | Perhaps the FTP site you are trying to connect to was down?
What FTP site were you attempting to connect to?
You might test that FTP site with the good old command line FTP client.
Your session will look something like this: Quote:
C:\>ftp ftp.uu.net
Connected to ftp.uu.net.
220 FTP server ready.
User (ftp.uu.net none)): anonymous

Rep Power: 3 | Also make sure "passive mode" is selected.
This will help you connect if you are behind a router or firewall. |

Rep Power: 3 | Could you tell more about passive mode? I have seen this many times when I was working with FlashFXP to connect to FTP sites.
At that time I did not think much about it .
Actually I'm planning to develop an FTP client so I want to get into other details about the various options. |

Rep Power: 6 | Good one Rob!
I would also suggest going direct to the source: RFC 959: File Transfer Protocol (FTP).
This is where you will need to go if you intend to develop an FTP client. |

Rep Power: 3 | Developing an FTP client would be difficult work.
I think there are so many good clients out there, that theres no need to spend time writing your own
I like CuteFTP and Smart FTP the best |

Rep Power: 3 | WS_FTP is ok too, but the new version wants you to pay. You can find the old freeware version somewhere. |

Rep Power: 3 | FTP Client Just a suggestion, but in order to connect to an FTP client, you must use a username and password and make certain your options or preferences are set correctly within the program itself. This is just a place to start. Good luck! |

-C | You can do this, however its not the best way.
I find when downloading files like this, connection will drop out and the file just stops - leaving you to start again.
It doesnt drop out nearly as much using a real FTP program so there is less danger of being cut off when downloading a large file. |
