Lost MP3's after using Music Tag Editor

Recently I was going to burn an MP3 disc. I was putting around 200 songs on the CD and i wanted the file names to be nice so i could scroll through on my cd player. So, rather than doing it manually one by one, i downloaded a couple programs (shareware and freeware) that were supposed to do it for you. unfortunately, one of them programs did something with my files. Around 250 of them to be exact. I am not sure if it deleted, or just changed the names, or what. I believe it may have changed the file paths or something but i cant seem to find them. i did a recovery software thing but it was not free and would only show u the f iles. The files still come up in my warez (music downloader) and say they are from the same file, but they are not there. I dont know what to do. i dont even kno if this is the right forum, someone just please help.

What program were you running that caused this error to occur?

Have you tried to find your MP3's using:
  1. <Start>
  2. <Search>
  3. <Pictures, Music, or Video>
  4. <Music>
  5. <Search>

The program was Music Tag Editor. And yes. Basically i found like 3 copies of all songs. I have my songs into two folders under my music player. One is top 40 and i have about 500 songs. The other (to which the error occured) was all other, rap/hip hop/ r&b. Basically i have found about 75 of the errored files, but t hat is only because i had them saved in another folder also. I am still missing around 200 songs. The start-search-music files-search, meerely jst turned up stuff i already knew, nothing new.

I downloaded and installed Music Tag Editor 1.5.1. I tried to configure it as little as possible, to give it the best chance of matching your settings.

The program seems to work fine, for what it does.

My MP3 filenames tend to be higher quality than their corresponding ID3 tags.

When I let it change the filenames to match the ID3 tags, it renamed many MP3's to filenames such as "Unknown - Unknown.mp3". Unfortunately, as they were all in the same directory, it renamed quite a few MP3 files to that same filename -- overwriting all but the last file.

It did ask me to confirm, and I did click the "Yes to All" button. And, of course, I had a backup.

I'm sorry to hear that your MP3's are gone. I've lost data on many occassions, but I never seem to learn completely how important it is to maintain a current backup.
