Rep Power: 0 | Microsoft Office I've very recently bought a new desktop and I've been looking around for some application software for things like word processing, spreadsheets, the sort of thing that Microsoft Office has. I know that there is more than MS office on the market but this is what everyone has been recommending me to get. The only problem that I have is when I see the price tag, I was wondering whether you could tell me if it is really worth the price, because it is so expensive?

Rep Power: 6 | Oh yeah! I'm stuck with a pre-fab computer with Lotus and Word Perfect. Gak! With Microsoft Office you'll get Micro Word, Excel, Outlook (email) all of which better... in my opinion!
Here's a link to Shop.com where you'll find Office 97 for $99.99 USD.

Rep Power: 0 | If you're not concerned with VBA code, then you could look in to OpenOffice. It has all the office functionality, and should work if you just want the apps.. and it's free.
From my understanding, though, it will take an Office file, read from and save to one, but I do know for sure that it kills VBA code. If you have any automation in your files, the trip is a one way death trip for it.
For most users though, it isn't a problem, so it could be a viable option.

I hate it when my computer does what I tell it to and not what I want it to!

Rep Power: 3 | I rarely use Office for anything.. maybe Word once in a great while. Just don't have much use for it.

Welcome!
This is good to know because I've used Excel for years and years and never had a need for VBA.* If anyone's using this currently let us know how it works for you?? I'm going to check it out because I need Excel ... or something similar!

Rep Power: 3 | OpenOffice is awesome. It is what I use in Linux and in XP, even though I do have MS Office as well. It will open any file and its .doc format is actually something different but it can save it as a .doc. Just download it from openoffice.org and it will install like any other program. It works great!

Rep Power: 0 | I can't afford Billy Goats software so I use Open. It works perfect.
I don't see why people spend $100s when there's so much free software out there.
