As the lost password is your Power On Password, you can't run any of the password recovery programs for the Phoenix BIOS used in the
HP nx9040.
On the
HP nx9040, if you forget the power on password, HP requires a repair at an HP certified repair center to reset the computer. Unfortunately, this service is
not covered by the warranty.
For more information on that process, read
Using a HP Certified Repair Center to Repair a Notebook PC.
Alternatively, you could open your laptop and try to find the RTC (Real Time Clock) chip, look up the specifications for that chip, and then reset the chip. Unfortunately, HP's
Maintenance and Service Guide isn't nearly as detailed as desired.
Another alternative is that you could simply replace the system board in the unit. The nx9040 uses the 371795-001 system board.
PcHub has those on sale for $166.12.
