What codec is needed to run some videos?

I have downloaded a video file in .avi form, but I cannot figure what codec I need to play it with. It comes with no readme or no information on the site. I already have DivX, but it still won't play.

I really hate it when that happens.

There must be a better solution, but the only one I know is to install a huge codec pack and hope that the one you need is in it.

Thats weird that DivX didnt work, I have had good success with it. Try getting VLP video viewer. Try to search the codec on google. Good luck!

I use Windows Media Player Alternative and it provides all required codes in it.

If you dont want to use that, search for 'Nimo Codecs' on Google and download that.

I downloaded a program called ffdshow, and it included the codec I needed. I still don't know what codec was required, but ffdshow had it. Nimo looks good, too. How does Windows Media Player Alternative compare to WMP 9?

The Alternative version is so much better.

No loading times, no overhead and no extra junk that you don't need.

The one I use is actually called Quicktime Alternative but plays WM files as well-
