Codecs are available from numerous sources. To decode a movie, you must have the same codec that was used by the person who encoded the movie.

Of course, people seldom label their movies with the name of the required codec. One tool that helps improve that situation is the GSpot Codec Information Appliance. GSpot attempts to tell you what codec was used to encode a media file.

The easiest solution, however, is just to install lots of codecs and let Windows Media Player figure it out. One good way to do this is to install a "codec pack", which is a collection of the most popular codecs.

Here are a few good codecs and codec packs:

Koepi's XviD

XviD is an open source MPEG4 codec for educational purposes only.

Nic's XviD Binaries

Home of Nic's XviD Installer.

3ivx MPEG-4 Codec

Create and playback MP4 files with MPEG-4 Video and MPEG-4 Audio using The 3ivx Filter Suite.

The 3ivx video decoder supports Advanced Simple Profile video decoding including DivX 3, 4 and 5 playback.

Codec Pack All in 1

Codec Pack All in 1 6.0.3.0 includes :

- DivX 6.1.1
- XviD Codec 1.1
- DivX, XviD - FFDShow 17.02.2005 Alpha
- MPEG2 2.0.0.0
- Subtitles G400 2.83
- Subtitles DVobSub (Win9x, Win2k and WinXP) 2.23, 2.33
- OGG Vorbis 0.9.9.5
- AC3 1.01a RC5
- Morgan Multimedia Stream Switcher 0.99

K-Lite Codec Pack

K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs, DirectShow filters and tools. Codecs and DirectShow filters are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video formats. The K-Lite Codec Pack is designed as a user-friendly solution for playing all your movie files. With the K-Lite Codec Pack you should be able to play all the popular audio and video formats and even some rare formats.

also try using Windows Media Player Classic instead.
It seems to have a better ability to play a wider range of movie types.
