Codecs are available from numerous sources. To
decode a movie, you must have the same codec that was used by the person who
encoded the movie.
Of course, people seldom label their movies with the name of the required codec. One tool that helps improve that situation is the
GSpot Codec Information Appliance. GSpot attempts to tell you what codec was used to encode a media file.
The easiest solution, however, is just to install lots of codecs and let Windows Media Player figure it out. One good way to do this is to install a "codec pack", which is a collection of the most popular codecs.
