Yahoo and Microsoft Test IM Interoperability

Yahoo Inc. and Microsoft Corp. on Thursday said they have opened their instant-messaging networks to each other in a limited public test.

The two companies will begin by offering up the new open messaging networks to users with the latest version of Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger. This test phase is meant to ensure the networks can handle the combined accounts of approximately 350 million worldwide, the companies said in a statement.

Last year, Yahoo and Microsoft agreed to connect users of their instant-messaging services worldwide. The announcement followed Google Inc.'s launch of Google Talk, which is based on an open standard and has about 811,000 users.

GAIM and Kopete already allow you to do that and are much better and with a lot more networks than MSN and Yahoo

This is a bit different. This isn't a chat client that connects to multiple chat networks, this is two chat networks connecting to each other.

Good idea but only if they did it for every IM network, or at least for as many as GAIM or Kopete supports, until they do I'd rather just have seperate accounts, it's not really a problem

I just tried it out on the new MSN messenger and i am pretty happy with it. If they can get AIM to come on board, that would be pretty sweet.

diff with AIM/Trilian is that,from now on , In latest Windows Live messenger you can chat with a Yahoo contact (and vice versa)
