Exclamation Question - Networking hardware suggestions/help

Here is my issue, and I really hope someone here can either point me in the right direction, or offer me some helpful suggestions. I am just one of 4 people that live in a 2 story house. We have a regular Linksys wireless router and 1 hard line running downstairs to another router (wired). So we potentially have 4 computers and a X-Box running through to the "Network" I know I could physically wire each room in the house and put a switch somewhere, but I am curious to explore other options before I take this avenue. I know very little about networking, but have also researched briefly into simply getting a wireless access point, a "ranger extender" or even multi-gain antenna's to just boast the range. My question is if I simply boast the range, what are some of the options, and if I can explore other options with the wired equipment, whats available. I would like to have a above average signal through-out the house for wireless, with the option of a wired connections in at least the 4 of the rooms primarily used with internet.
I have heard of some equipment (hardware) that I swear mentioned using the electrical outlets (I may have read that wrong).

I know this is a long question, but any idea, thoughts or suggestions would be very appreciated. 1 of the roommates cannot connect to the internet she is paying for, because the signal is too low, and she is connection from someone else's wireless connection from somewhere outside our house with a perfect signal. Sometimes networking can get really frustrating.

Thank you in advance to anyone, any ideas are welcome, no matter how much or how little.

Brian

There are range boosters that plug in wall outlets. I did not have much success with them. There is probably some kind of interference weakening the signal. Could be other wireless equipment or sometimes it's just the walls themselves. You could try one, but I do not believe it will help. You can always return it, as I did. If you have another router downstairs, why not just hardwire the computer?

There is a wealth of knowledge on networking hardware. I would start with google and Linksys, of course.

Cool

We have both wireless and hardwired systems for both Mac and PC. The Mac has no problems with either system, but the PC's always seem to have a lot of problems with the wireless systems. We have our PC's hardwired. There is a new wireless system coming out around this summer, but I doubt it will work as good as promised.

Thank you for the replies. I went to Best Buy and bought a new router. I bought the RangeMax™ Next Wireless Router WNR834B. I think it's pretty much done the trick except I don't have a very strong signal downstairs in my room, so I am still "wired" I have a Wireless "G" network adapter card for now, and next week the RangeMax™ Next Wireless Notebook Adapter WN511B I ordered should be here. I am hopeful that I should get a better connection. I am considering either to but a wireless access point, or make an attempt to reconfigure my Linksys router to be an access point (at reduced speed of course) but we'll see how that goes. I only wish I could find a way to add my HP Officejet v40 to my network. The issues I am having are that it's not set up with an ethernet port, it isn't connected so any computers on the network, and I cannot find ANY printer servers wireless or wired that are compatible with this printer. I am posting these questions on the forum so if anyone has any suggestions to my current issues I'd appreciate the input.

Did you buy the program (Flash) yet?

If not, then don't. Buy SwishMax, it does everything Flash does, cost 1/10 the price and is much easier to learn
