Any advice ??

No software needed.
Netgear make good routers. Their admin interface is very easy to use as well and its plug and play with XP. 98 you will have to install drivers but it works well.

Are you looking to use a WIRED or a WIRELESS network?

Basically any of the routers are good and most are easy to set up. It mostly comes down to personal preference and what is on sale this week. I have used Netgear and Linksys and find both to be very good.

Wired network will require LAN ports on both machines but no software other than drivers.

Wireless will require wireless cards for both machines. XP should be fine but 98 I think would need a wireless network configuration app, but those usually come with the wireless card.

I plan on using "wired" router. Basically to use the "net" on 2 pc's.

".Wired network will require LAN ports". Ok, I lost at that statment...what is a Lan port ? Sorry guy/gals....1st time for "networking" on my end !!!

Thanks All

a LAN port is a network card.

Chances are the XP machine definately has one, but the 98 machine MIGHT now.

It looks kind of like a phone (modem) port except bigger.

As long as you have network ports all you have to do it plug in and configure the network settings.

If you do not you will have to buy a network card, but they are PRETTY cheap.

My Prefrances

Yes networking is easy once you do it the first time. if i were you i would get a wireless router just in case you want to go wireless in the future or decide to add computers in the future in differant rooms. you can alwase turn off the wireless feature for the time being while you have everything hard wired togather. i also suggest a linksis router. that is just my prefrance since i have one. also if you get a wireless roughter get a "G" it is faster. and will be worth the little bit of extra money
