Rep Power: 6 | Give us the Hotspots in your area! We've started to expect wireless internet access at the airport, libraries, hotels, colleges... yup, even your local Starbucks. So, let's hear 'bout the more "unusual" hotspot areas in your town! Be sure to put your city's name in the title.

Rep Power: 0 | Probably my house! Before I encrypted I used to regularly see up to 8 connections running.
I still don't know if that was just me connecting to someone, or if I was being used! I'm a bit confused on the topic, but I don't see all those connections anymore since upgrading my router.
I even once noticed someone parked outside my house late at night for hours at a time.
What a world!!
Would someone be justified to run around the neighborhood with a baseball bat, demanding entrance to all homes in the vicinity to check their internet connections?
Notice, I have a volatile nature, so please be gentle in your responses!! :p

Everyone should be careful with this WIFI stuff. The are not a whole lotta security currently in place... from the provider. From what I've read, there are people who will camp out at Starbucks or a park or where ever there's WIFI so they can get access to the computer of the person next to them! That's when they still whatever personal information they might have on their computer.
It's okay to use WIFI just be sure you don't keep account numbers, passwords, your social security number and the like on your computer!
You're right... what a world!

Rep Power: 0 | Well gee Ed!
What I think is that we're all going to have to learn how to be more secure.
I did once start to try to figure out how to encrypyt my personal information, but I couldn't wrap my mind around it at the time. I have to be in a high state of paranoia before I can force myself to figure things out. The good news is that I read enough to work myself into a high state of paranioa quite frequently these days!
Little by little, I'm getting there!
The PC security thread should be a hit! There's a service for the PC 101 crowd!! It really is difficult for people who are new to the internet to figure all this out. Most of the tech discussions presume a fair amount of knowledge, so usually people find things out the hard way when it comes to security, I'm sad to say.
I haven't done too badly though. I've been on the net since before there were browsers, and so far I've only had one virus, and I fixed it all my my wee self!! Ok, not quite, I had a little bit of help, but mostly I did it all by myself. The good part of going through a mess like that is that it makes one quite determined to never suffer through it again!!

Rep Power: 3 | Hotspots Hey All,
I remember a way back...(um..1990 or so) when I got my 1st pc. It was a 100 mhz Pack Bell.with a 14.4 modem, a whole 16mb's of ram (win3.1...then 95). I use to surf the "net" without any "spywrae" or "anti-virus" or "firewalls". I had "cookies" and "active scripting" enabled also. Back then....there were about 3 major SE's. Those were the days.Hardly no-spam too. You could visit your local BBB's and feel safe on the "Net".
Now days......with all the evil people out there......who the h*ll can you trust.
What is this world comming too ??
I some times sit back & wonder....What in the h*ll are we headed into ?

I take it you're in SF or the Bay Area??
That whole darn place should be wifi'd for as many users there are AND for how tightly everyone's cramped together.
