That is an interesting issue.

EDGE (Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution) is a specification for data transfer on GSM networks.

WiMAX is a broadband wireless point-to-multipoint specification.

The two networks serve very different purposes. My first question would have to be "What do you hope to achieve by connecting them together?"

WiMAX could give EDGE users more bandwidth and cheaper bandwidth while they were within the metropolitan area served by WiMAX.

Conversely, EDGE could give the WiMAX users connectivity outside of the metropolitan areas.

One technical challenge in connecting EDGE and WiMAX is that EDGE is a mobile wireless system and WiMAX is currently a fixed wireless system. You might have to assume that the EDGE user was not mobile while connected to the WiMAX network.

Another issue is antenna size. EDGE antennas are tiny, because they have to fit within a GSM mobile station (MS). WiMAX antennas tend to be much larger, because they are designed to be stuck on the outside of buildings.

And, of course, GSM and WiMAX operate on different frequencies.

Hmmm...

What's your question?
