Wireless Internet

In regards to Wireless Internet issues, I know that people are able to get onto other people's network. I'm not ok with people being on my network. What security issues should I be worried about?

You shouldn't be worried at all.

You should enable 128-bit WEP on any reasonably-recent WAP (Wireless Access Point) and not worry. 8)

By "reasonably recent", I mean "recent enough to support TKIP."

If you are the more worrysome sort, you can also enable MAC Address Filtering.

This is the state of the art today, and provides adequate security in most cases.

Everything will change when 802.11i becomes generally available. 802.11i is really secure.

Just set a password on your router or else people can just go in the range of your router and pickup Internet. However, it will take some effort to mess with the other computers on the router.

Ok. For some reason I was thinking that people would be able to get into my files. I'll just set a password for my network because I really don't anyone getting the service for free.

So long as you don't have file sharing set on any of your machines, or if you do, they're password protected on each individual computer then you won't have any problems with people accessing your network - the only problem being they can "borrow" your internet connection

A simple 128-bit WEP as Will suggested should suffice to keep your network safe and secure - though you will have to make some minor configuration changes on each computer on the wireless network in order to get them to access the network... Time consuming, but better to be safe than sorry

I think it'd be pretty tight if more people let their internet connection become open so that eventually everywhere is basically a Wi-Fi hotspot. That's as long as people don't hog your bandwidth  .

Sharing your Internet connection is all well and good if you implement a firewall between your computers and your wireless and Internet routers.

Of course, it may violate your contract with your broadband provider!

I think most ISP's now accept internet connection sharing as normal, they just wont support it when something goes wrong.
