Rep Power: 3 | Hackers Has anyone ever seen that movie? Can people actually do that type of stuff or is that just story telling and fantasy?the whole idea of being able to manipulate any computer in the world simply through a computer and a phone line seems a bit far fetched to me.. |

Rep Power: 6 | Hacker's was pretty awful, from a technical standpoint.
The acting, script, dialog, and special-effects were pretty bad too. |

Rep Power: 3 | Yeah, but the movie rocked! Come on, it was cooooool, even if it was "awful from a technical standpoint".
I've known some people who could do some pretty crazy things with computers. |

Rep Power: 6 | The modem must be set to auto-answer and the computer must be running some sort of software which communicates with the modem in a host mode.
If those two things are true, then you can get a login prompt. From that prompt, you are usually guessing passwords. |

Rep Power: 0 | Yeah, the stuff that they do in that movie is insane, but who in the world has that type of skill? |

Rep Power: 6 | Well, the skills displayed in the movie are impossible to obtain -- because they are not technically correct.
However, it is possible to obtain an astounding level of technical skill through diligent effort. You have to research and you have to experiment.
If you only research, you become book-learned and fail to develop skills which you can actually use. You know what can be done, but you don't develop the technique (and the confidence) to do it.
If you only experiment, you end up making progress very slowly -- because you are not benefitting from the work of others. You learn a few things very well, but you don't gain much breadth or even depth. You die of old age before you become really skillful. |

Rep Power: 3 | Most real world hacking is done using social engineering....or at least that's the first step |

If you can tell me what type of encryption it is, why you need to do it etc then I might give you some advice, but only advice, no "h4x0r h0tm41l in e4zY s73p5 l0lzzz!!11" rubbish that if you're a script kiddie you'd be expecting |

Rep Power: 0 | Heh, that was a little harsh.. =P
To be hounest eddy, becoming a resonable 'hacker' takes such a long time, it's just not worth it.
As with most security things, people feel if they don't tell anyone about something, if they make the security it'll be safer, or if they break security things, it'll last/work longer.
Unfortunatly, security through obsurity has never worked.... but that's irrelevent...
But yeah, i sold my teenage years to security, trying to inch my way closer to being like ZeroCool from Hackers =P
What can i show for it?
Well, i havn't hacked any radio/tv stations just yet, or changed the big screens in Trifalgar Square to read "oO RusH Oo + girlfriend 4 ever", however i can use my monitor as a radio, and pick open my front door if i loose my keys...
....wasn't worth it -_-;
Oh, and maybe this'll interest you: http://www4.ncsu.edu/~smheath/news14.html
It's over a year old, but the people who did it are working on doing it again. |

Rep Power: 3 | You usually learn to hack by doing legitimate stuff. Learn about networking and become a sysadmin, you'll learn how to prevent hackers and therefore how to hack.
Hacking is actually about exploring systems and learning as much about them as possible and how to do anything you want with them, if you learn how networks and the internet works legitimatly you'll learn to do things that aren't quite what it was intended for.
If you set out to be "a hacker" you'll probably fail, you need a lot of background knowledge. Downloading SubSe7en, sending it to your friend and opening his CD tray is NOT hacking. |

Love when someone maybe guesses somebody's password to there e-mail the automatically consider themself a hacker. Hacking is very simple and once you learn the basics of what you would like to do it gets easier. Most "hackers" that actually hack stuff hate helping people because they love being know as hackers and in the mind of your average person, hacking is hard. When in reality...ITS NOT! |
