Rep Power: 10 | Avast! killed my internet access...
well... sort of...
I was on the internet last night and all was fine! I wake up this morning and I have no internet. My ISP is Verizon and I'm running with FIOS. So, I check the connections, reboot the modem (twice), checked the box in the garage and nothing appears to be amiss!
I called Verizon, sat on hold for a few minutes and was finally connected to Matt. We ran though the usual stuff (which I had done) but then we had me log into safe mode. Oops... forgot about that option! And sure enough, I was connected to the internet! So, Matt suggests it's probably my security software which likely updated overnight and then reset my security settings. It did! I took the security setting down a notch and voila... I'm back in business!
I'm a big believe of having your Window's software auto update, but I'm not so sure about non-windows software. I changed my avast! settings from auto update to "notify when updates are available." |

Hey Lyte,
I HAD Avast om my PC a bout 2 years ago. This piece of "crap" done all kinds of thing to my sytems. I then "deleted" it, even going into the registry, deleting anything that had Avast connected to it. This is why I use AVG Free Edition and update it when I want to !!!

Really?! Hmm... this is the first time it's misbehaved. I took it off of auto updated. Hopefully that'll remedy the problem. |

there is no programme that is 100% perfect as per compartibility with other software&hardware, what i think its important is for a programm is to perform it role for which it was installed.

oderinde,
You are very right! The moment a company comes out with a piece of software that is malware proof (if such thing were possible), it would last maybe 10 seconds before some bozo created a new form of malware or discovered a way to defeat the software!
The best defense is know where you're going on the web and know what you're downloading!

I like to mix things up, since I have 4 computers. I use ESET (nod32) Security on my bedroom puter. I use AVG on my laptop and garage/studio puters. Avast on my TV puter, which has worked flawlessly since I installed it. That doesn't mean that things can't go wrong, especially, if you do get infected.
If I had to pick one or the other, Avast or AVG, I personally would go with AVG.
Like someone else mentioned, no one AV is 100% perfect. I have had viruses on computers with all different anti-virus programs, including AVG, Avast, Norton, Kaspersky and NOD32. You guys are probably thinking...what the hell is he doing to get all those viruses? Let's just say, I use to download a lot of stuff.

Depending on where you live, it can pose copyright infringement risks. Anytime you want help with it, please feel free to PM me.

Hi pablowdidit,
Welcome to PC101
I like Avast too. It's the best free AV available in my humble opinion.

Howdy pablowdidit,
Welcome to PC101
I really don't know what the problem was with Avast but it slowed my computer way down and then I couldn't get onto the internet. As soon as I uninstalled it everything was fine.
Hope you enjoy being belong to PC101.
Lyte

Lyte | My guess is it conflicted with some other software you had installed at the time. Did you by chance have Comodo Firewall installed back then?

I tried Comodo too and it dragged my PC down. But I don't think I had them installed at the same time.

It actually forced me to re-install windows, as it glitched things up so badly. That's why I asked. I hear Comodo is much better now though.
