Rep Power: 5 | I don't have a positive vote, but I do have a negative vote.
Norton Anti-Virus has just gone to heck. It used to be excellent, but now it's more of a danger to the proper functioning of your Microsoft Windows machine than viruses are. |

Rep Power: 3 | I agree with you Will, its only the first time I used Norton and within two days I had it removed.
But my college and the computers at my workplace use Norton, I wonder with so many other nice anti-virus floating around why do they go for Norton. :-/ is it cheaper???
It installs so many unwanted utilities and takes up so much memory too. |

Rep Power: 3 | Earlier I used McAfee for a while. Later on I moved on to NOD32. It is a cool software and has regular updates. I like it a lot personally. I use the thirty day trial. |

Rep Power: 3 | My ISP provides me a somewhat similar to McAffe- its synergy i guess. I used it for a while and later decided to block the anti-virus and then instead go for a better firewall. I tried out a few firewalls and stuck up with Kerio Personal Firewall. I just have the anti-virus installed but i dont run it in the background. when i am suspicious about a file i just launch it right then, check it out and then close it again.
Instead having a firewall i feel is more important, the first time i used firewall i was scared to death, that no application runs if it wants to go online.Later i go used to the settings and stuff and now i m a good friend to that one.I would post another thread about 1 min shutdown and how it can be resolved and here too Firewall plays a keyrole. |

Rep Power: 3 | I used to get a lot of those when i connect XP to a network. My cousin used to somehow resolve all that. i did not bother much about those 1min shutdowns. |

Rep Power: 3 | I have never used the MS Anti-spyware
I don't think it would touch viruses by the sound of it; I cant see them giving away AV software for free |

Rep Power: 3 | I've heard about NOD32, and it seems to be highly recommended by people with 64-bit systems. I don't have a 64-bit system, but a 32-bit system, and I'm currently using Avast. I used to use AVG. I can't really choose between them, though. They are both pretty great. They can both detect a bad file and stop bad java files from accessing your computer. The free anti-virus software seem just as good as paid ones. Update your OS regularly, and you'll be fine, most of the time. |

Rep Power: 3 | I prefer Norton Antivirus, it catches almost ALL viruses.
I know that the scans can take forever to do but its the best antivirus software.
But if, and I mean IF, Norton is not my choice, I will have to go for AVG AntiVirus. |

It is the single most worst piece of software I have ever used.
I have used McAfee for the past 2 or 3 years and I am much happier with it. |

Is it because its more secure, or because there arent enough people using it to warrant it to be attacked? |

Is there software that is pretty good but is free? Has anyone tried those free ones from that guy who gave a link to them and found a great one? Please tell me. |

Rep Power: 0 | I've experienced so much hassle with PC's running Norton or Mcafee I always suggest to there victims to remove them, if they can, and Install AVG. This must be one of the best free AV programs out there, you can complement this by using one of the on line scanners such as Panda Active scan
The only one that is better is Sophos it's pretty expensive but very very good.
As far as M$ and AV go the only one they have is an add on for MSN 8 Beta.
For Anti Spyware you should always have at least 2 packages installed on your PC, the M$ one is ok but I would recommend Webroot's Spysweeper. |
