Rep Power: 7 | Fast and Free Security Enhancements Before you spend any money on your PC or Networks security there are several ways you can protect yourself from the most common threats. - Check Windows Update and Office Updates regularly. Click on the Automatic Updates tab in the System control panel and choose the appropriate options. Here's how...
- Click Start.
- Click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
- Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
- Click the option that you want. Make sure Automatic Updates is not turned off.
- Add a personal firewall like Zone Alarm which is free!
- Install a free spy ware blocker. SpyBot is a favorite of many, I use it and run frequently!
- Block pop-up spam messages by disabling the Windows Messenger service which is not the same thing as the instant messaging program.
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Click Administrative Tools
- Click Services and you'll see Messenger. Right-click and go to Properties. Set Start-up Type to Disabled and press the Stop button.
- Use strong passwords and change them periodically. Click here to learn how to create a memorable and reliable password.
- If you're using Outlook or Outlook Express be sure to use the most recent version and have Outlook Security Update installed.
- In Outlook, go to the Help menu, click Check for Security Updates.
- Follow the instructions for downloading the appropriate Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.
- Buy yourself some quality antivirus software and keep it up to date. If you're not willing to pay there's always Grisoft AVG Free Edition. But don't let our AV be the last word on what's lurking on your PC. You can back up your AV with a free online scan from Panda Software and Trend Micro's Housecall.
- If you're running a wireless network, but sure to turn the security features ON, turn OFF the SSID (service set identifier) broadcast, and even use WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) with the biggest key you can get. Be sure to read the section on security for your router/modem during installing. While most are plug and play, the security portion does require more detailed attention!
