IE hijack and notpad.exe

[R3drum]

Hi all,

I got a problem with my IE. My homepage keeps changing to an unknown page and my loading of pages is extremely slow.

There is also a notpad.exe at my windows startup. Could it be attributable to that?

Please assist.

That is an almost sure indication of some sort of evil malware infecting your system.

That's not Notepad... check this line from your HJ log:

Unfortunately, notpad.exe is a filename used by several different pieces of malware, including these three:

W32.Israz.B@mm:

W32.Israz.B@mm is a mass-mailing worm that uses its own SMTP engine to send itself to all the contacts in the Windows Address Book and Outlook Address Book.

ItEye/Backdoor.Delf.cc:

ItEye is a Remote Administration Tool, or RAT, i.e. a Trojan that when run, provides an attacker with the capability of remotely controlling a machine via a ""client"" in the attacker's machine, and a ""server"" in the victim's machine. Examples include Back Orifice, NetBus, SubSeven, and Hack'a'tack. What happens when a server is installed in a victim's machine depends on the capabilities of the trojan, the interests of the attacker, and whether or not control of the server is ever gained by another attacker -- who might have entirely different interests. Infections by remote administration Trojans on Windows machines are becoming as frequent as viruses. One common vector is through File and Print Sharing, when home users inadvertently open up their system to the rest of the world. If an attacker has access to the hard-drive, he/she can place the trojan in the startup folder. This will run the trojan the next time the user logs in. Another common vector is when the attacker simply e-mails the trojan to the user along with a social engineering hack that convinces the user to run it against their better judgment.

Backdoor.Win32.SdBot.13856.B:

Backdoor.Win32.SdBot.13856.B is another backdoor program, like ItEye.


It is quite depressing that your system is infected, in light of the mass of security software which you have installed.

Once a system gets backdoored, I would write it off. I would do a clean install from known-good media.

My IE got hijacked too and I am using FF at the moment. I tried using AdAware to remove the malware but it does not seem to work.

Post a log from HijackThis and we can work through removing the evil code from your system.

You shouldn't use Adaware for your adware/malware troubles. Webroot's software is far, FAR superior. Go to www.webroot.com and try it out. It's worked on things you never would have thought could be fixed.

Yes, it does cost money but it's well worth it if you're out of options.

Some bad things live in your machine:

ishost.exe, issearch.exe, and ismini.exe are parts of Trojan.W32.Zlob.

ipwins.exe is from ClickSpring/PurityScan.

If Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware fail to remove these, I would just kill the processes and delete the executables. I would probably also delete the corresponding registry entries.
