I like Avast, for free AV. It scans email, it updates frequently, and has a boot scan feature, which in my opinion sets it apart from the others.
The bottom line is that no one AV is perfect. I use Avast on my laptop, but stick to Eset (NOD32) Security for my desktops, but that isn't free.
