Internet Program access

Hi, I'm running Windows XP home edition at my house and im having a problem with programs trying to access the internet. I do have internet access (I got to this page using the afflicted computer) but certain programs namely iTunes and Comcast Rhapsody are telling me that I don't have internet access and are blocking access to parts of those programs. I have lowered the settings on Windows Firewall and Zone Alarm so that they should be allowed to access the Internet. Any Ideas?

iTunes uses port 3689.

Rhapsody says that they use the following ports:
  • Control channel (bi-directional): TCP 80, 554, 7070, 8080, 1755 for MMS Windows Media requests
  • Data channel from server to player: TCP 80, 554, 7070, 8080 or 6970. 32000, TCP 1755 for MMS Windows Media resend requests
  • Authentication and Sign-in require TCP 443 (Secure Socket Layer)
  • HTTP 80 for AutoUpdate and Messaging
What a network soup! Those guys at Real never cease to amaze me -- with their incompetence.

If some Layer 4 protocols are working and other Layer 4 protocols are not working, that usually means that Layers 1-3 are fine and that you have a Layer 4 (Transport Layer) issue.

That points right back to those two firewalls -- or to another firewall or ACL (Access Control List) between you and "the Internet."

However, sometimes web traffic is a poor test because it is often proxied. If traffic to and through the proxy works and all other traffic fails, it can generate symptoms which are difficult to diagnose.

Check your web browser configuration. Is it using a web proxy?

Turns out the problem was that I recently reinstalled Internet Explorer and some of the settings had be reset. I pretty much just checked every box under the Internet options. It's all a bit over my head, and it's late. Thanks!
