Modem Question

Not sure if this is the right place for this question but....

Is there a way to use a single two run my Internet connection to two computers?

A friend has the Verizon DSL modem being used on one computer. He wants to add a second computer and (hopefully) use that same modem to access the Internet.

Any ideas?

A router will solve this problem.. you only need one modem which plugs into the router. You can then plug several computers into the router

A router is a good solution. If you dont want to buy a router , then you can use proxy servers. There are some good , Free of cost servers like analogproxy or ccproxy [ not sure about ccproxy whther its free or not].

You can also use Microsoft's Internet Connection Sharing for this, but it's fairly buggy.

I use a LinkSys 802.11b-g Wireless Access Point with a built-in router and firewall for this and it works much better.

Oh yeah... I router would be the best choice because it will serve as a firewall too!

hmm.. theres a problem ! I guess , this internet sharing thing is just doing the routing , i mean passing the request from other machine through the main machine [ in which connection is available] to internet gateway. But some ISP s like mine blocked private IP s other than they assigned even blocked users against their NIC MAC. So in this situation the only solution is Proxy Server , which can easily pass request to Internet using the main machine IP and NIC.

The only stable proxy server I have in my life is Squid. So far can't find any stable proxy server in windows. I have tried ccproxy , analog proxy ..all of them have some problem. None of them is perfect !

By the way , does Microsoft ISA server serve the purpose of proxy server ? without any problem obviously !!

Most folks appear to recommend WinProxy.

Microsoft ISA Server supports NAT, so it should work to get around IP address and MAC address limitations set by ISP's.

We put in a router a couple of years ago, and it's worked really well so far. The great thing about it is that you can have the computers anywhere in the house as long as you have the right amount of cable. The only bad thing I've ever experienced with it is that if the main computer is messed up for any reason, none of the other computers work.
