network says connected, but no web access?

hi, I am a semi experience newbie, if that makes sense and I need some help.

My PC is having trouble accessing the web. I am connected to a router, that is also connected to my laptop. The laptop has no trouble connecting, but my PC will not access web pages. Despite having no access, my network connection says its connected and working. When I click Repair in the network settings on my PC it says it cannot clear the ARP cache, so I figured out how to manually clear it. But still no change, and when I try to repair my connection it still says cannot repair ARP cache, so nothing happens. I don't know if this is why the internet isn't connecting. HELP!

The usual bug that causes the ARP cache to fail when Windows is (usually accidentally) configured as a network router.

To work around this Windows bug:
  • Click the <Start> button
  • Click the <Control Panel> button
  • Switch to "Classic View" if you are in "Category View"
  • Click <Administrative Tools>
  • Click <Computer Management>
  • Double-click <Services and Applications>
  • Double-click <Services>
  • Scroll down to <Routing and Remote Services>
  • Double-click <Routing and Remote Services>
  • Examine the "Startup Type"
  • The options are "Automatic", "Manual", and "Disabled"
  • Set the "Startup Type" to "Disabled"
  • Click the <OK> button
Now try once more to clear your arp cache. This should work this time with zero error messages.

Try that and let me know if it clears up your connection issues.

still nothing

thanks for the help but it doesnt seem to have done any good.
I did what you said, and manually clearing the ARP cache worked fine. But this still did not fix my connection problem. The network connections still says connected, but I cannot access the web. And again when I try and "repair" the connection, it gives me the ARP cache error message. If you can think of any other reason for this that would be great. thanks!

What is the exact error message you receive?

Also, can you do an ipconfig /all and paste us the output?

Either:

A) The DNS server at 192.168.2.1 is broken
-or-
B) 192.168.2.1 is the wrong DNS server.

I am willing to bet that 192.168.2.1 is the wrong DNS server.

In most cases, the DNS server addresses are automatically configured via DHCP. If DHCP is not configuring your system with the correct DNS addresses, then you will have to configure those manually.

Contact your ISP and ask them what their DNS server IP addresses are.
