Creating websites at what resolution?

I know a lot of websites don't do it, but it's always suggested that websites be built for 800 x 600 screen resolution. Do you think this is still necessary? And if not, what's the best choice?

Some people still say 800x600, others have moved to 1024x768.

Me, I build for 1920x1200 because that's what my laptop is set for.

I've got it easy, I don't have to please anybody but me.

haha good one Will!

I notice most of my visitors use 1024x768 so thats what I base things on now.
Although 800x600 is still also used by alot of people (unfortunately!)

I primarily design to 1024*768, however it is always good not to go too overboard, so that smaller screen sizes are still able to view it reasonably well... for example, a centred website at about 780px will still look fine in a 1024*768 resolution screen, but will fit perfectly on a 800*600 screen... pleasing most people.

I still make my layouts according to people with 800x600 resolutions. It's hard to use three columns in a 800x600 resolution layout, though, unless you have an ultra small font or something.

Thanks for the input everyone. I generally design for 800x600, too, but I really don't like to. 1024x768 seems pretty ideal to me, I wonder what the actual statistics for this stuff is.

I just checked W3, and it says 25% of users still use 800x600 which is odd because I remember it being around 40% a few months ago. I guess more people are switching their technology over. Here's a link to the statistics:
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

They can be found near the bottom of the page.

Well I guess their stats are accurate as they would have access to alot more user data.
Personally my own websites stats tell me less than 10% of users are using 800x600

I still design for my own userbase though, so 1024x768 is my standard.

I just have a bg so that if it's bigger or smaller they layout will remain relatively the same. I keep my important stuff in teh center and just have a bg on the sides. Besides the top.

I would say it depends on your target audience. If you are going for "casual" users, not too computer-savvy, use 800x600.

I received enough complaints that I am now testing an 800x600 template on this web site.

I'd go with 800x600, I know some users who still use that resolution.

I'd stick with 800x600 for maybe another year, by then most should have made to move to 1024x768.

I'm just gonna stick with 800x600 for all my sites, otherwise I get too many complaints

I think 800 x 600 resolution is a safe bet, but for more technical sites, you may try 1024 x 768 or higher.
