Rep Power: 6 | Well, obviously we here at PC101 use VBulletin. I chose this one because it seemed to have the greatest opportunity for adding hacks/mods. It seemed more flexible than the others.

Rep Power: 2 | phpBB. All other free BBS are fine, but phpBB is by far the most popular. A bunch of mods and easy to get help. It has many problems. No doubt about that, but problems are manageable. Also once you get used to installed mods and stuff, it gets easier.

Lyte | Many of those who run multiple forums use phpBB. If you use vB and run multiple forums, then you need to spend several hundred dollars just to set up forums. It's a lot of money to me, and I don't find any compelling reason why I need to do that.
To me ... phpBB is a much more wise choice financially.

Rep Power: 2 | phpBB Beta2 is out now. There is a good chance that the final version becomes available by the end of this year. If you're not in rush, then waiting for it to come out is an option.
... FYI, I'm kind of thrifty (cheap?), and ... my opinion may be biased.

Rep Power: 3 | True lol! I guess we'll just add a comment box. Then again, there will be a whole site dedicated to just transfering files

Rep Power: 6 | Ya know what we could do is offer file sharing... the legal kind. If such a thing exists! lol
I'm immediately sorry I said that! That would be logistical nightmare!

Rep Power: 0 | I personally use SMF, it's easy to hack, I have never had support issues from it. It was way easy to set up and upgrade to the newest release version. It's very easy to skin, or you can get custom skins from some devs their forums. Mods up the wazoo for your site.
another thing I liked about it was that I was able to make my portal from scratch and implement info from the forums in it very easily. And of course it was free. |

Rep Power: 2 | I use phpbb, probably because its free. It has a lot of great features, and can be easily modified. Because of its popular there are lots of different mods available. |
