Rep Power: 2 | Running some experiment: Promote a forum in other forums I keep hearing that you should promote your forum in other forums of similar interests while you link to your forum from your forum signatures. I just started running some experiment. I just started up an alternative energy forum, and ... I'm guessing that political lefts and environments are interested in this topic. So, I just signed up in the following two forums and started posting. http://www.ringoffireradio.com/forums/ http://newmediarevolution.org/forum/
My forums signatures link to the alternative energy forum. I might register and start posting in other similar forums ... I'll see what happens ...

Rep Power: 6 | Hey Stoli,
So, if I understand you correctly, the forums...
Ringoffireradio
Newmediarevolution
are someone elses and similar to the one you want to promote?
The weird thing about getting back links from simlar sites is that it's very counter to the benefit of the site you're "advertising" on. So for example... I need to other computer related sites to advertise PC101. BUT, how excited is the owner of those sites going to be with a computer essentially advertising an their site?! It can be tricky sometimes to get all the backlinks one needs!
And... to make matters worse... from discussions I've read about links in SIGS, the search engines don't give them much value towards your Page Ranking. So, you'd have to have HUNDREDS maybe THOUSANDS (?) of this SIG back links in order to really see a return on your efforts.

I don't mind having a forum member who links to his/her forum from his forum signature. In fact, I'd be very happy to have him since he actively participates in my forum. Quote: |

Lyte | True. But ...
1. I'm still promoting my forum ...
2. Every link counts ...

Rep Power: 0 | Well, most of my traffic comes from specialized forums I post at. I don't care about PRs and stuff like that, but for people to actually come to see my site. It's been working very nicely and I can have some serious members because of this. Just keep on writing useful content in the forum you promote yourself in and start being seen as a valuable member. The rest is history

Rep Power: 3 | we have plenty of oil though. We just don't have enough refineries to process crude oil. It takes like 10-12 yrs to go through all the political and construction work.

Rep Power: 5 | We do have plenty of oil -- but we have to pay either Islamists or Communists for it.
I'd rather pay ourselves to use nuclear power to generate electricity and then use that electricity to run automobiles either directly or via hydrogen. |

There is somewhere up in canada or northern US that has oil in the sand. It is said to have more oil than the middle east. Just have to extract it.

Rep Power: 5 | Extracting that oil is difficult and therefore expensive. It's cheaper to by oil from the Islamists and Communists, so that's what we're doing. |

Rep Power: 0 | When it comes to how SE's consider backlinks in forums, I think that you may be right, to an extent. On google, I have a few links from forums, out of the 2000 posts or so. On Yahoo, I have a few hundred. On MSN, they seem to give you full credit on every link that you get. I think that that's why I rank #1 or top 10 for MSN on so many keyphrases. I am only first page in Google for about 10 keyphrases. And no first page Yahoo queries that I know of.
I think that Google gives more weight to a relevant link, and doesn't really pay that much attention to whether it's a forum link or not. I'm not even sure if Google can tell the difference between a forum and any other webpage.
I wrote an article on an interesting report that I found back in July. If you are interested in Search Engine Optimization/SEM at all, then take a look. http://mothfiles.blogspot.com |

Rep Power: 2 | I don't think that you should post in forums just for the Search Engine Optimization benefits. You can get much better results from just trying to get traffic from the links themselves. This is a much easier and more satisfactory method. |

Rep Power: 2 | Thisis an interesting idea. Many people do this, but dont think of the Search Engine Optimization benefits, just on problem. Image a whole page full of links, the crawler for the search engines will pick up a lot of things and singling your link out wont be easy for someone searching.
