What is Web 2.0 ?

There is lot of buzz going on now a days about Web 2.0.

It would be nice if you can give a FAQ on it... :idea:

Its a bit of a buzz word at the moment that one.
I cant see it really being a revolution as some people are saying.

Heres a nice article explaining its origins.

That is true.There are quite a lot of projects that have been floating around which are based on the Web 2.0 The o'rielly and team gave a set of principles, a collection of several techonologies like torrents,adsense,etc and they call it as web 2.0 and trying to give a specification like anyother open webstandard. there are too many techonologies that you can see on the linke given by rob.

So its not really a technology in itself, but rather a collection of technologies?

Yes, like most of the technologies that are out there , this is a collection of existing technologies, might be with added support like additional API written for java/C++/C# developers.

It seems to be the new web design standard. It also seems to be the new age of the web. I'm a web designer and in "web design terms", well maybe only for it, it seems like it involved RSS, XHTML, CSS, and all that good stuff. Semantic HTML using CSS to lower the size of websites. RSS to syndicate a news page throughout many places. I really love RSS, though. One site can be syndicated throughout hundreds and hundreds of sites.

I hadnt heard if it in web design terms before. As others have stated there is an official "web 2.0" out there though. I read an article about it in Popular Science or Popular Mechanics (forget which). Im pretty sure it is just mega fast but isnt going to be used by the average person for a long time. Theres something else to it also if I remember correctly. I'll check out the article again sometimes soon and post anything else that I find interesting.

Internet = network
Web = sites on the network

Internet 2 is the super-fast network between a collection of college labs and high-tech firms (the telescopes in Hawaii can be controlled in Houston using Internet 2).

Web 2.0, read kelp's description I think he's right.

Wow! I didnt know about this new technology. Looks pretty cool, thanks for all the great information. I wonder if it is actually going to become more popular and if it is actually going to be widely used.

Web 2.0 is just a collection of standards and technologies. Its not one particular thing on its own as many may suspect.
I dont believe it will take off in a big way, as it depends on too many factors, all of which are controlled by different forces (people).
