Well, I for one would just like to know what it is... or isn't compared to Windows.

I've always had the impression that Linux was something for BIG corporation type set ups. Is it for the single pc user too??

Thanks!

Yes of course, anyone can use linux.
You are probably thinking of Unix which is generally used on servers.

There are alot of distributions of linux available now that allow people with not much experience to install them. They are going down the windows road now, with GUI and everything.
Linux used to be only for hardcore command line programmers, not its really heading to the consumer market.

GNU/Linux is a very stable and customizable system, that is if you know how to work in it. GNU/Linux uses the Linux Kernel and GNU programs for the base system. There are Distrobustions that make Linux as user friendly as windows, Ubuntu, SUSE, Mandriva and Fedora are a few that do this.

My 2 cents on the subject

Hello zvez,

Welcome

Thanks for the info on Linux. There are a few of us who are trying to get up to speed on just how it works!

I know a good bit on linux but am not guru by any means or know a ton of info on it lol. If you have questions, just ask um'. My advice is to read a book and learn the command line, it is a life saver time wise.

@Dr911, don't learn just Ubuntu, it is great to really know your operating system but will pay off in the long run to learn the commands involved in unix like (cd /home/pics/4-wheeler) will change my directory in the command line to the 4-wheeler folder. to view the stuff inside that folder type ls(stands for list).

Learning stuff like this will make you at home on any Unix based machine, BSD, Linux(any flavor, Mac, and UNIX itself. Just my 2 cents.

Hey firestorm,

I have 2 CD's....1 is the "install" CD & the other is the "Live" CD. The following works for "Windows" !!

Have the "Live" CD installed be4 you shut down Windows.

Go into your "BIO's"..change the boot order to"run" from CD-Boot up"first".

The 'Live" CD will then install WILL-NOT install any files on your HD.

Once finishes, tune off, remove CD.

It's intererting, going take getting used to tho !!

glad to see you got it working! Play around with it a little and then load it on its own partition. Look up some unix commands to do some experimenting. Feel free to ask questions. If you think it can be done, it probably already has been by someone .
