Laptops built for Linux?

I'm thinking of buying a laptop, since I don't think it's very easy to build your own? I don't want anything advanced, just something to work on away from my main computers but I would want to put Linux on it, i've never installed it on a laptop before and heard there's some compatability issues, I've seen some laptops built for Linux on websites but they're quite expensive.

I'd ideally like 512Mb+ of RAM but with the price i'm looking for I'd settle for 256Mb with the possibility of upgrading it in the future. I'd be wanting to pay up to about £400/$700 as I wouldn't be using this as a main system, just for taking out.

Does anyone know of any that are built for Linux at about this price or that aren't specifically built for Linux but you know will handle it fine? Preferably from a UK supplier but international is fine if the postage isn't too much.

Linux has become very good at hardware support. I woudn't worry so much about hardware compatability, I would just make sure I had a good return policy in case it didn't work.

Alternatively -- have you considered a used laptop? You won't get a return policy, but you will get a better laptop for your budget. And, you should be able to Google for other peoples experiences with most laptop models and Google.

I know about Linux, it's laptops i'm not sure about, never really had much experience with them so I'm not really sure what special hardware support they need. I think I might look for a used one, since it's not going to be a main system for me it would probably make sense to get a used one and save money.

They dont need any special hardware report, linux will run on basically anything.
Any laptop you buy will be fine

I recommend you to buy any modern model from IBM, HP or Toshiba. These brands haven't any problems with drivers and would be a good choice for installing linux.
