| Red Hat is particularly tough to use because it became the industry standard flavour of Linux. Although plenty of development houses favour other distributions, there was a point in time where you ordered a server and had a choice between Windows Server and Red Hat, and very little else.
I would say that the installation is not the most user friendly, that would be more Mandrake's speciality. I also had problems running it on various platforms, especially those using older hardware. I like to think of Red Hat/Fedora as a professionals operating system, something along the lines of Windows 2000 Professional. It is fairly raw and relies heavily on you knowing what you're doing for best performance, and perhaps isn't the best choice for home use.
I've quite happily experimented with various Operating Systems, and must say that Red Hat/Fedora was one of my favourites. I do concede that it isn't for the faint hearted, particularly if you have any specialised hardware, but once you get through the installation you will come across something powerful and very stable. A perfect development platform albeit more suited to applications than games. |
