Lightbulb Why not Linux ?

Exactly !! The title of this post says it all. I would like to know why you dont want to shift to Linux. If you have tried then do post your own experiences. Tell which distro you used and what pestered you most.
You may also look here for some lighter side of using Windows from a linux user perspective.

Smile Linux and Unix are coming in near future!

It is good idea to start excperience with GNU/Linux and Unix.
There are still some programs that are not running under Linux. Also i find that for the most people installing such OS is not an easy task.
I have personally tried Linux SuSe and FreeBSD. Also I am kind of fan of the live cd OS systems such as Knoppix 4.02 and FreeSBIE 1.1 .
I think the future is in these Open Source OS.

I'm not very familar with Linux but I get the impression it's not plug and play like Windows. Am I wrong??

Linux is a vary broad OS with many flavors(distros). There are some LIVE CD's which are plug and play and will boot from your cd drive without even touching your HD(Gentoo Linux is I believe).
Linux is NOT for everyone. Some poeple don't know a harddrive from a keyboard. Once you know some basics(takes a couple hrs to get the feel of it-Command Line, different layout, customization, updates...).
Knoppix is very small and works great for little comps. To see the full power of Linux though I suggest Fedora Core. I use it everyday and it has never failed me(no crashes - the one that I accidentally f'ed up my graphics card, my fault on that one for experimenting ).
Ubuntu is pretty good from what little I have used it.

--Basically, Linux isn't for everyone and will probably never be. It just isn't that user friendly and everyone doesn't want to put forth the effort. Definitely worth a try though for the above avg. user.

No OS will challange Windows unless its as or more idiot proof as Windows.

Not really idiot proof, but just most advertised. Linux is actually better as far as stupid proof but Windows is just out there more and more accessable and easy to use(minus the lack of security to obtain this). But all in all, Windows will be hard to challenge for any company. Mac is gaining ground though.

More people are using Windows because of marketing but Windows is also easier to use because more people bought it and provided feedback. How much ground is Mac gaining? Will they ever catch up?

My BF said the same thing. You can't just toss a disk in and go.

Mac is doing better since they have the G5's and even newer stuff out now. I think they have a new OS coming out as well.

As for reformatting the HD. Slush is right. You can't blame that on linux. That is like installing Windows on a Linux comp and clicking next next... same occurance with a blank HD. Just read up before doing anything with OS's and you'll be fine

Linux is better than Windows because you can customize it as you wish. It gives you the liberty to do what you want with your PC. It is true that an average PC user finds very hard to deal with that liberty. But for a person with some knowledge in this are, Linux is a real paradise.
Linux tries to offer an alternative but you cannot fight with a huge company like Microsoft® on the market.
I use now Ubuntu Breezy Badger and it works very well. It is the best distribution for newbies: friendly graphic environment, huge documentation.
