AVG Antivirus

Who has used AVG Antivirus? The free version I mean.

People tell me that free AV programs are no good, is this true?
If I used AVG Antivirus would it really protect my system the same as something like Norton would?

We have a couple people on here using AVG and have expressed their satisfaction in the product. I'm stuck with McAfee for until my subcription runs out but then I'll be switching over to AVG or AVAST.

The one down side I heard about AVG, and I don't know if it's still true, is that it's not as autimated as Nortan or McAffee. So, if there's a scheduled update and you're computer isn't up... you don't get a pop to remind you... nor does it try again later. Hmm!

I hope others will chime in with their experience!

I use AVG free edition, and have no problems with it.

I used AVG Antivirus in conjunction with Norton Antivirus for about a year...I would say that if Norton caught 5 viruses, AVG would catch 4 of them. However, Norton ended up *causing* problems on my system.

The ones I would reccomend would be Avast (free) and Nod32 (pay). Unlike AVG and Norton, they're both good at catching viruses the moment they infect the system. They helped me to identify a program that had been infecting my computer with spyware at startup.

I am using Nortons and AVG atm. They both catch the same thing although I've only had 1 virus in about 2 yrs and that was partly my fault

So AVAST is better than AVG for free AV software?
I have not even heard of Avast before.

Im scared to try free anti virus again but can you use 2 at the one time?

Here's a list of AV's I would use if I wanted a free AV. The list is in order from 1 being the best.

1. Avast
2.Anvtivir
3.AVG (not a freat detection rate to some)

In my experience, Avast is exponentially better. And it's way better than Norton Antivirus, which is pay. I think most people haven't heard of Avast...it's either not very well advertised, or just not very popular.

Um, and you're not really supposed to run 2 antivirus programs at once. I did it for a year with no problems, but it's really not a good idea!

Running to AV's at the same time can cause conflicts. It can come to a point that you think you might have a virus slowing down your computer. Remeber before installing a new AV (or any other program), completely remove the other AV. Some AV offers a removal program that will help you remove all the of the products registry keys and everything else.

Hmm ok so I should give it a miss and try something else?
I thought since it really seems to be the most popular and talked about free AV I figured it might be ok but if it doesnt detect properly then there is little use using it!

I have been using AVG Free for many years, from Win98 to WinXP now. It works so great that I have tried other AV but still stick to AVG. It's the best free AV for me.

i agree with fab totally
i am too still using avg first i used norton but later i switched to avg free edition and it works great still i am using this only
