Probably back in the day being a "geek" would get you beat up. Now they have Geek on Call so it's more accepted. Robert

It depends on how you percieve it. My brother calls me one every once in a while, but mainly as a joke. If you want a job in it, it's not bad at all. If you spend all of your time playing Zelda or some game online, then maybe it is meant to be derogatory.

@dgridley- Girls dig athletes more, especially in uniform.

It's definitely a derogatory term, but the meaning of the term is changing for variety of reasons. There weren't that many computer engineers decades ago, so they were a group of special people; some probably perceived them as those who lacked social skills, those who could not hang out with normal people, i.e., "geeks." But you can't really not know anything about computers today. If you don't know anything about computers, then your career won't go anywhere. Doctor, lawyer, accountant, whoever you are, you need to know a lot about computers. You kind of need to be a "geek." This certainly changes the meaning of "geek."
