| It's definitely a derogatory term, but the meaning of the term is changing for variety of reasons. There weren't that many computer engineers decades ago, so they were a group of special people; some probably perceived them as those who lacked social skills, those who could not hang out with normal people, i.e., "geeks." But you can't really not know anything about computers today. If you don't know anything about computers, then your career won't go anywhere. Doctor, lawyer, accountant, whoever you are, you need to know a lot about computers. You kind of need to be a "geek." This certainly changes the meaning of "geek."
