How did the Internet become Public?

How did the Internet become public? Didn't the Internet start off as a military research project? What happed to turn a military network into the awesome public Internet that we have today?

The Internet really isn't public. The Internet is really a collection of private networks (AT&T, MCI, BT, NTT DoCoMo, SingTel, etc...) tied together at network access points.

Not that the government believes that, of course.

The Internet started as the ARPANET, run by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Later, the project was expanded to Universities and eventually to private companies.

Then, eventually, the military seperated most of their networks from the Internet due to security concerns.

The internet was the brainchild of Al Gore in the 1980's. While he went off to work, he secretly planned and replanned how he could fit this all together to make one big system to help him rule the world. When this failed, he sold off different parts of his ideas to different companies and ran for VP. And that is how it all began...
