Why do people love to hate Bill Gates?

I really like Bill Gates, but why do some people hate him so much?
Do you believe it is jealousy? I do. I think they are very jealous of his money.

I think he is a great businessman, a genius even, and I admire his motivation and persistance in building his dream. I also respect him as he gives many millions of dollars to charity.

Well, the more well-known you are, the more likely you are to have people who dislike you, right?

I was talking about this with my mother the other day...there seems to be a difference in generational perception. My generation seems to see him as a symbol of Evil Capitalism, and her generation seems to see him as a symbol of a self-made man. The truth is probably somewhere in between.

He Stole the Technology

This web page just about sums it up. Bill Gates stole basic and then an operating system and took what were basically open sourced applications and applied very restrictive licensing to them. Some will say genius, but I say it's pure EVIL!

Quote:
When the IBM representatives showed up at his doorstep, Gates recognized this lucky break for what it was, and promised them an OS. Because he didn't have one and couldn't make one (at least not good and fast enough) he bought the rights to a CP/M clone from Seattle Computing Products, and filed off the serial numbers.

its all he said she said, there are no hard facts in any of that, BUT even if he did, he capitolized on something that on one else did, so there loss, his gain.

Well... I didn't read the entire article but it seems to be that (first) Gates took what was an open source software and made it better. If he/they changed it enough, then it was within his right to copy write/trademark this new product for MSN. This goes on all the time, everyday.

Then I read that he bought a piece of software or the rights to it and again, changed it around and offered it up as a "uniquely" Microsoft product. Again, if the product was obtained legitimately and then changed enough, it can become a unique and proprietary product.

Again, I didn't read the whole article.

I did watch a very interesting show on MSN a couple years ago that talked about them reverse engineering other company's products (a very common practice) and attempting to monopolize internet browsers.

I don't feel too sorry for older and presumably wiser companies (e.g. IBM & Apple) for getting manipulated/talked into giving Gates whatever he wanted. "Buyer beware!"

Does Gates and/or MSN have completely clean hands?? I seriously doubt it! But, I'd not go so far as to call one "evil" when it could be that he's just more opportunistic and a tad shrewder than the next guy.

Im aware of what he did with the software in the beginning, but he was smart to do that!
He saw profit potential and he jumped on it.

With news of his cutting back work at Microsoft the other day, Im quite upset about it and am not looking forward to the day that he retires altogether!

good and bad

ok with out microsoft, the computer may have never evloved in to what it is today.

here is my opinion.

i dont mind paying you for a service that you provide me. ( creating windows) i dont mind you making a profit off of me. (you have a business and need to make money so suceed) but i dont like it when you want to get rich and retire off of me. if you charge me a fair price then i am more than happy to buy your product if it is what i need. but dont screw me just because you can.

example: GAS----i know Exxon needs to make money off or me they will go out of business. but when i am spending over $500 a month in fuel to go to work and school, and you are reporting and unexpected 20 billion dollars of profit. that just pisses me off.

i feel the same twards any one who does business like that. another example.

i am not going to buy a music CD for $18, no i am going to download that. but if i can buy it for $10-$12. then i will gladly spend my money on it.

i am going to take a stab in the dark and say that if you look at it and break it down most people feel this way and just dont know how to express it. instead it comes out as i hate microsoft, or i hate Exxon Mobile. and i think most people are more than happy to pay a fair price for somthing and let the company make some money off of their product, but we all feel screwed when greed kicks in and people want to get rich on us no matter who they step on to do it.

Yeah, I more or less agree with this statement. He's no saint, but I certainly don't call him "evil." What some people and companies are doing nowadays are just horrendous. Make drugs and test them on rats; next thing you know they're selling to people who are seriously ill. Not surprisingly, many people die because of those drugs. Oil companies pollute the environment and make taxpayers pay for that. There are many more similar examples. Compared to those people and companies who have zero ethic and zero moral, Bill Gates almost looks like a saint ...

I totally agree CheapQualitys words. Bill Gates doesn't have anything actually. He is not going to take the money with him to his tomb, or if he will, it won't help him anyway. I wouldn't go blame Bill Gates, he made his money fairly and he didn't cheat anybody. Hundreds of African country dictators are more reach than him, but he is the only one from those, who doesn't need to carry so big load, stolen money. Bill Gates has ambience for computers and he has been developing a things, that have helped the human nation so much. I would say, that we should give him peace and love, not war and hatred on blaming him. He is a great man.

First of all, Im not happy that microsoft force us to buy new computers.
every 3 months or more, microsoft launch new softwares wich need more ram, more cpu resources.
Second: Force people to buy or install illegal copies of Bill OS, why?
400 dollars per licence is not cheap.
Finally I dont like bill gates dont know exactly why

I wouldn't go so far as to say he "forces" people to steal. Definately, $400 is a LOT of money but research and development costs a lot of money.

There are alternative to Microsoft's OS... what about Linux?? But, I understand Linux is not as plug 'n' play as Windows which is (one of) the reasons it's so popular.

Bill Gates is good guy. You peoples must know, that he has given 2/3 of his money to charity. He isn't also responsable about the microsoft billing. The company of microsoft needs money for their researches. With out money there wouldn't be any technology. Bill Gates is just a veteran in this area and he is good man, which has right to rest with out no hate. He isn't anymore even the leader of microsoft, so why should he be responsable?
