Back in business...

Hey ya'll,

Sorry I've been out touch in the last 48 hours (no posts). I've been dealing with this whacked out problem that my IP addy was "blacklisted." Huh?!

You'd think the simplest thing to do... and the first thing to check... would be to change my IP addy! So, I contacted my ISP (Verizon) and that's where the "fun" started! They sent me to Microsoft because it was outbound Outlook emails that were the problem... they sent me to Dell who made my computer... who then wanted to charge me $100 to fix the problem... so I went back to Verizon cuz I was still sure the problem lay with them and I get this 1st level tech who tells me that my IP can NOT be changed, that it comes from my hardware... then she says my software... then she tells me I have to contact McAfee. Ugh! I finally get a Supervisor (2nd one) who changes my IP... and BAM... I'm back in business! Geez, I could have had this fixed three days ago!

Here's the error message for everyone's amusement...

Response received is: 550-Message rejected because pool-71-96-2-73.dfw.dsl-w.verizon.net 550-(DELL2KGWP61) {71.96.2.73]:1523 blacklisted at list.dsbl.org see 550 http://dsbl.org/listing?71.96.2.73

I can put the IP in cuz it's not mine anymore.

What I learned from the guys at DSBL.org (where my IP was blacklisted) is that a whole range of IP's can be blacklisted and if your IP is sitting innocently in that range you're going to feel the fallout and it sucks! I tell ya... I have a new found dislike for spammers!

Back in a bit...

Hey Lyte,

Glad you got your IP address fixed. Are you on Cable or DSL ? I have 3 PC's and fix a number of PC's. I'm on cable......so every time I switch a PC for someone, I have to call "Tech-support" and they re-set my modem. ( I know...time for a router). Some times tho....you can do this: Select---->START------>RUN type: winipcfg. On the bottom you press "Release All".....wait until you get a all clear....then press "Renew All". But..this is using an Ethernet Card only.

Hey Doc,

That's pretty much what the 2nd Supervisor had me do... start, run, type cmd and then at the prompt ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew And bam... I get a new IP address and the problem is gone!

I realize computers, the Internet... and all that stuff can be pretty complicated but you'd think these friggin' Support centers would go for the easy fix first! The error message said my IP offended... okay, so let's change the IP and see what happens! Instead, I gotta spend time on the phone ... three times with Verizon... once with Microsoft who wants $35 to help you and once with Dell who wants $100 to help you. Geez!
