Question satphones in remote US locations

OK, seperate from my "professional" posting, I am considering buying one square mile (640 acres) in Montana/Wyoming/South Dakota in the next 2 years.

The property is at least 50 miles from ANY town and I will need some sort of communications. I was thinking satphone since you can charge them via solar or plug-i if I had a generator. Initially, I will not, so solar will be my only way to charge the batts.

Anyone using a satphone in S.D.??? I prefer SD simply because the $ per acre is LOW!!!

Thanks,
TheShooter

I would follow a more... interesting approach -- although it will require more power.

WildBlue is offering satellite Internet broadband service using ViaSat S-DOCSIS technology.

I would buy that service and then use VoIP for voice phone calls.

Yes, it means that you will need a portable generator much earlier in your build process -- or a 12vdc -> 115vdc convertor for your truck.

Or heck, you might be able to power your laptop and the Surfbeam satellite modem off of 12v. Hmmmm...
