Building a computer

Ok ... I bought an Antec case and it says that it is compatible with Pentium 4 (whatever). I'm just wondering ... does that mean that it is only compatible (size-wise) with a Pentium 4 mobo or can I use an AMD? I'm trying to find a cheap and reliable motherboard/processor combo to put in that case because my current computer is basically maxed out. Will the power supply in the case also work with any chipset? Also, what mobo would you guys advise getting? Thanks guys.

Size of MO

If it's a new case, it should be an ATX case, so any ATX compatible motherboard will work as long as it fits inside the case, i.e., full size, mid size or micro. You should be more concerned if the motherboard and processer are compatible with each other. The motherboard only needs to be of a dimension that fits inside the case.

Asus is a good motherboard; Pentium; really doesn't matter, again, as long as it fits the case. Good luck!

How to build computer

Well, you want to get the motherboard first, then there will be a manual with it that tells you what you need for the processor. For an example, it may be, which it typically is, a 478-pin with a Front Side Bus Speed of, say, 366 MHz, but up to 500. The manual from your motherboard will tell you what type of processor to get. It only matters the pin size and front side bus speed.

I guess I just need a motherboard, I've been reluctant because I wasn't sure if I could ever find the info that I needed. Thanks a lot, but one more question:

So basically the power supply that came with the case should be compatible with any of the hardware I put in?

Building a Computer

Yes, your power supply that came with your case should work fine with any hardware. They're pretty standard. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask, and good luck! Just built one for my son for Christmas and wrapped it up. Thank goodness. It's quite the monster of a machine. Make certain when you're handling the board, memory stick, video card, etc. to not have any static on you. You may want to simply touch a static bag or something plastic before handling. Good luck.

Anybody know of any good motherboard retailers? I don't like to use eBay for hardware because it usually has a flaw or it was used.

I would pick the model that you want and then Froogle for the best price.

If you don't know exactly the model of motherboard that you want, I would use PriceWatch to look around.
