| All IT definitions should come with a freshness date.
A CPU (Central Processor Unit) is the main processor in a computer. These days, many computers have multiple CPU's, but each is still a CPU.
A CPU differs from other computer chips in that every type of chip is specialized for it's own specific purpose. An NPU (Numeric Processor Unit) is specialized just for crunching floating point numbers, for example. Other chips are specialized for graphics or networking.
CPU's are designed for general computing. You will occassionally see a CPU used in another role, usually because CPU's have good software support.
The CPU is special, because it runs the operating system and applications. It sends and receives data with other chips in the computer, but it is central to the functioning of the computer. |
