You need to turn your computer off NOW, so as to avoid damaging your CPU.

Them, you should probably go buy a new CPU fan.

Check the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and the cables on the fan. I suggest buying a new one if you don't get it to work. The stock ones are usually pretty bad anyways.

Could this be caused by a fried circuit/chip on the motherboard?

When was the last time you cleaned your computer insides of dust build-up? Thick dust can restrict fan use.

I agree with the dust. Check and make sure there is no dust, either suck or blow it out.

Then make sure the power cable that hooks the fan to the motherboard is securely plugged in.

If still no go, you will likely have to replace the fan. If you have never installed a cpu with a fan before, I would suggest you get someone competent to replace it to you. Since you are going to be replacing it, you will need to make sure the tape or thermal grease is removed from the current processor and cleaned very well with alcohol before putting on the new fan.

The fan definitely sounds dead.
Replacing the fan/heatsink is difficult if you dont know what you're doing. You can actually crush the CPU if you arent careful.
Exactly which CPU is it?

Fan Problem

I agree. Your fan has fried. Hopefully, it didn't do any damage to your processor. Fans are really inexpensive; in fact, I usually purchase ten at a time, just to keep onhand, since we repair a lot of computers. You can find a lot of them on Ebay. Good luck!

I suggest Thermaltake or Coolermaster fans - they are high quality and often even come with LED lights (if you are into that type of thing)

Try to stay away from very cheap fans - they often wont last.

i had/have a similar problem, but i have a laptop. It used to make noise but now it just shuts down. I used an external fan to cool it down and it works rather well.

Laptops can be a real pain to work on, due to the proprietary designs and the compressed nature of all of the parts.
