Underclocking

I'm trying to put together a fanless PC = less noise. I've heard how you can underclock use fanless heatsink. Has anyone heard of this and have suggestions?

You shouldn't need to underclock if you buy the right chassis. http://www.directron.com/fanless.html

underclocking

underclocking does have some aplications. i dont recomend it if you are trying to build a computer that you use on a daily basis, and certainly not a gaming computer. but i dount mind saying that i do like underclocking for building a home theator computer. first off i would recomend an AMD socket 939 processor.for the simple reason of i like AMD and that is has a massive FSB (front side bus) up to a 2000 Mhz FSB. you could also go with a socket 754, or an intel (intel= 80 FSB), but the 939 is my prefrance. you can also pick up a fairly low speed processor for pretty cheap, and and SAVE some MONEY. as for a motherboard i like the DFI lanparty series, but a nice ASUS, ABIT, or Gigabit board will do just fine.

now looking at heatsinks, be sure to get 100$ copper as it is the best at heat transfer and disipation, also use a good thermal compound such as Quick Silver (again my persional prefrance). i have also found that heat pipes work verry well. and dont forget to lap the bottom of you heat sink. you can cut 3-4 degrees by just doing this. (laping is sanding the bottom of the heat sink untill it is shiney as a mirror).

the last thing to look for is a good case. stick to an all aluminum or all steel case to reduce temperature. also look for a case with big 120 fans. now i konw that you were looking to go with out fans, but big 120 fans will do you a coople of favors. if you are truly going fanless, then they provide bigger areas for air to freely flow,( aka. heat to escape). second, if you find that you need a fan, or 2, 120's will move more air a lot quieter than a 80mm fan will.

lastly dont stick you newly built computer in an enclosed area. leav it where as much air can circulate through it as possible. what i mean by this is dont stick it inside an your tv stand where ther tv reciever, satalite box, cable box is at, they put off a lot of heat and will not help your newly build computer out. instead buy a pretty case so that you can leave it out in the air. this way people can look at it and dont know it is necessairly a computer, but it get all the cooling it wants. cooler master and silverstone make some nice flat cases.

underclocking is taking a componet and making it run slower than it was designed, this saves heat.

Thanks for the info. Im going to try and go fanless and see what the temp tops out at before adding a fan.
