Definition: Phishing

Phishing (fish´ing) is a type of internet fraud that's designed to steal personal information such as bank account numbers, credit card numbers, social security numbers, passwords, etc.

The process is fairly simple... a fake website is created to look like a like a legitimate organization such as a bank, insurance company, EBay, PayPal (to name a few) and then an email is sent to an unsuspecting party with a link that directs them to that fake website. Once there the user is prompted to "update" their personal information which is then recorded. Once armed with your personal information a phisher can steal your identity, open credit cards in your name, order goods or services on your accounts and sadly, so much more!

Beware of any emails you receive asking for your personal information! If your not sure, log into your accounts from the company's home page! Don't follow links!

Ahh yes, I've had people try to phish my Paypal and eBay accounts several times. One time an email really scared me, because it said my eBay account was suspended and I had to log in to dispute it. I was about to do it when I realized the mail came from [email address] or something like that. It was a huge relief to know my account was not really suspended.
