Installing a CPU
The following instructions are intended to lead you step by step in the process of installing a processor/CPU/chip onto a new motherboard. The steps for
replacing a CPU are similar but first you’ll have to follow these instructions in reverse so processor already attached can be removed.
Three important points before we begin…
- Be aware that motherboards only support specific brands and types of processors. Read all the documentation that came with your motherboard and CPU before going ahead!
- Be sure to read the documentation that came with your motherboard, CPU and cooling system/solution so you’ll know where to find the processor slot, heat sink mounting clips and CPU fan header locations.
- And.. these instructions presume you have the motherboard uninstalled from the computer.
So…
1. Inspect the pins of your new CPU. Are any of them bent? They should all be pointing straight, perpendicular to the chip. If several are bent get a replacement! If you find just one or two bent you might try and straighten them out. Consider first how you will do this very carefully! If you bend them too far you may break them and the chip will be inoperable.
2. Locate the processor socket ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) on the motherboard. Fine the little lever (see arrow in photo) which when closed, lays down but when open will be in the vertical position. Raise the lever gently. Be sure not to force open and break off the socket!
3. Make note of the chip pattern on the CPU by locating one of the following... a little dot on one corner or a notched corner or a mark on one of the pins. On the socket there is typically a similar notch on one corner. These corners are where the CPU and socket will match up and allow for proper installation.
4. With the CPU aligned as described above and making sure all the pins are lined up with the socket, you can lower the CPU into the socket. Be sure all the pins enter the proper holes! You should NOT have to force the chip into its place. If the CPU doesn’t drop easily into place, double check that the socket is all the way open AND you have the chip properly oriented to the socket.
NOTE: If you do not have a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) be very careful! Set the chip on the socket making sure all the pins are lined up. You’ll want push the chip in slowly and evenly. Push one corner down ever so gently until you feel it go in (slightly) the slots. Then go to the opposite side of the chip and follow the same process. You may have to repeat these steps until the chip is completely installed
5. Now with the CPU fully set in the socket, lower the lever on the side until it is locked into position.
