What are cookies?

Cookies are a means by which a server or a script can maintain information on the client's workstation/computer. In other words, a cookie is bits of information about a person's visit to a web page.

A cookie can include such information as the way a web page was customized or how a visitor shopped on a web site, or it can be used to track repeat visits.

This is a double edged sword, it is all about how the cookie is used and what information it contains. There are tons of valid uses for cookies including password protected content, auction systems, shopping carts, etc. Unfortunately, you get the bad with the good.
