Rep Power: 1 | I would say the newely added phpBB 3 gold. It as a better styling to SMF, and with a couple of free modifications SMF cannot touch it. That's my opinion anyway. phpBB 3 and SMF, are always 50/50.

Rep Power: 2 | SMF and phpBB are both good for beginners, but just remember that you get what you pay for If nothing else you'll learn a lot of coding by using them.
Neither is as good ( or secure) as IPB or vB. You should also be aware that many people will not join a phpBB forum because of stigma that they have. vB is way over priced, there is no doubt about that, but it is the best product on the market so far. That may all change though soon, since another company just bought them out... |

Rep Power: 1 | phpBB 3 as the best admin panel ever. Probably even better or the same level as vBulletin. I am both a vBulletin user and phpBB. So you have words from someone who as tried both.
In case your wondering, I used vBulletin in the end. Its owns.

Rep Power: 1 | myBB *mybboard.net* had 80% the look of vB and 95% the function. It's free and sometimes be said as vB clone. But I prefer SMF or phpBB |

Rep Power: 2 | MyBB looks interesting. Now that vB has been bought out and the new company has raised their prices, we will be waiting for our license to run out and then switch to another forum software. We will NOT be paying vB the higher prices. Hopefully by then MyBB will have matured into a good substitute |

Rep Power: 6 | Hey AA,
Yeah... I saw those higher price notices. But what compares to VB and what's $40 year? I mean, once you've already paid then you only have to pay a yearly fee.

Rep Power: 2 | The yearly fee for a owned license is going to double - from 30.00 to 60.00! The 40.00 is only if you buy a license and update within a few months. Most people won't use that. I'm updating all of my licenses before June 1st '08, then I won't have to worry about the pricing BS for another year. In the mean time I'll keep my eyes open for what I'll switch to in June '09. |

Also guys. I have installed five myBB forums today. So I will soon give feedback on the software.
