Java Goes Open Source

Sun Microsystems is going to make Java Standard Edition open source, kind of.

The limitation is that not all of J2SE was developed by Sun Microsystems, so Sun an only make the portions which it developed internally open source.

It should be very interesting to see how Sun manages this with all of it's development partners.

Too bad it's such a pathetically useless language, had to learn it for my degree, never had a use for it, probably never will.

Java can be hellishly annoying, but I wouldn't call it useless. It's finding quite a niche' in embedded applications.

Also, a good percentage of the programming jobs available are Java programming jobs. I'd say that makes Java useful.

Java is definitely not useless! God, there are so many jobs available working with Java, its the language I see most in demand where I live, followed by PHP, Perl and ASP.Net
If you know Java well, chances are you can make a very good living off it.

In terms of jobs available for Java - there are a lot many people with the skill set that includes Java than the jobs that are available.

But since I have been involved in a bit of embedded software development, I do have a soft corner for Java. And hence, the statement that Java is useless, causes a bit of jolt in me.
