Rep Power: 0 | Which programming languages are you acquainted with? Note: This seems to be the first post here in this section. Hence I thought I would create a thread that would help the community get the feel on the aspect of programming. Edit: Doh! After merger with the Tech-FAQ forum, this post no longer remains the first in the section. :P
So, what are the different programming/scripting/procedural languages that you are acquainted with?
Here, let me start. - C
- C++
- SQL
- PL/SQL
- (X)HTML/CSS
I also know a bit of: - PHP
- Java
- Perl
- Unix scripting
So, what is your list?

Rep Power: 6 | Does good ol' HTML not make the list?! That's the only type of coding I know. I'd really like to start PHP... someday!

Rep Power: 0 | Ofcourse. HTML does include in the above list. I noted it as (X)HTML just because HTML is a subset of the (X)HTML. (X)HTML has just more strict conformance to the XML DTD. Pages marked up with (X)HTML could be validated with W3C standards. |

Rep Power: 6 | I've coded (poorly) in Apple BASIC, IBM BASIC, Turbo BASIC, C (GNU and Turbo), C++ (GNU), dBASE III+, ObjectPAL (Paradox for Windows), SQL (MySQL), PL/SQL (Oracle), Assembler (8088), COBOL, Unix shell (sh, ksh, bash), PERL, Java, JavaScript, PHP, and probably a few other that I've (thankfully) forgotten.
I am the worst coder imaginable. Thank heavens for RentACoder.com.
HTML is a markup language, not a programming language. It lacks the flow control necessary in a programming language. |

Rep Power: 0 | Wow! You got a good list there. I did code in IBM BASIC, 8086 Assembler, (and also 8051 microcontroller assembler - other than the ones mentioned above. But, yes, the same case as yours - I have forgotten most of them. Quote: |

| Exactly. Hence, I said Quote: |
... different programming/scripting/procedural languages ...
| so that I could include some more than stated in the title. :P
I too get that urge to correct everyone who state HTML is a programming language. There are so many of them who say they know HTML 'programming'. :P
Anyway, thanks Will.Spencer. That list of yours made me go down the memory lane with a hint of nostalgia.

Frankly, the only coding I do is that which can be done on FrontPage. lol

C and C++
SQL
PHP
Perl
Java(lil rusty on it, never really liked it)
Unix
**there are a few microcontroller programs i've written, but I don't feel like writting them **

Rep Power: 0 | Lets see, I know the following:
C++
Java (Very easy to learn if you know C++)
Assembly
HTML
PHP (A little)
It is possible to forget languages you have learned too. Some of the ones I've forgotten that I used to know very well were:
Pascal
Basic
I think the most difficult part of learning a language is not confusing the syntax with a language you previously learned. Right now I want to continue with PHP, but I can't. I am taking a course that uses c++ in school, and a course that uses Java in school. Some sytax of those languages are so similar I don't want to risk confusing something on an exam. |

Rep Power: 0  | I know this:
Basic ActionScript
Very little PHP
Of course, HTML
CSS
I've also been trying to learn Visual Basic, but it's really hard)

I mean, the profession I am in - a system engineer - that means consulting clients on their systems, I get exposed all the different technologies.
They all are a lot similar and yet are different. It is this that causes problems sometimes when you count on a feature of one language and mistakingly use it in another. That is the time when you wish there were just one coding language - at least in terms of procedural language.
